Album:San Francisco:2002-07-28 RockEm SockEm Robots:2007 Facelift

After three years of pathetic bucket heads, the Robots are getting a literal face-lift, finally looking like their smaller fighting brethren.

We'll be casting a mold (in plaster) and then using brush-on rubber to make the final cast. Photos of the process will be put up here as it goes along...

Building the heads out of clay The head,
prepped for molding after letting the clay dry a bit.
Preparing to douse
in plaster
The right side of the face,
globbed under fresh plaster
The other half,
after the first few layers.
Many pounds of plaster,.. ..and the mold is done! The next day
I pull off the mold, and unfortunately the clay comes with.
After cleaning out the clay,
a robot head negative.
Mixing the rubber,
adding Silicon Oxide as a thickener
After some thickening,
we pour in the tasty treat.
And try in vain
to scoop enough material into the higher zones to hold until we can put the bucket in to press everything down.
But then finally it gets sticky. Ack!
Too sticky!
Pulling off a few hours later
before it's totally set - and three spots aren't full, see the top left corner, for instance. This is also after I've cut off quite a bit of the flashing.
I fill the gaps
with more material and reapply the bucket to the mold.
Then it's time to remove the mold.
The layers of shellac and mold release did almost nothing,..
Okay, maybe a bit to..hick on the plaster. Finally a piece of the face is free! Stryder quickens the process.
Sad to lose a mold.. "I am not an animal!" Some plaster left,
but a first glimpse at the new face.
The new head
The Blue Bomber's head
next to the sculpting of the Red Rocker's new visage
I make a clay "pool"
to hold the plaster.
..and plaster the heck
out of it.
Removing the mold
from the head, again, took a great deal of work.
The clay removed. The mold release
didn't really work much at all this time, and the mold had to be broken and scrubbed off.
The Red Rocker's new face! Haley's new face!
