1948-1
( comments) Mom wrote on back "January 1948 Mickey 1103 Hawthorne" "80" Mikki is standing on one of the stools Dad made. I think each kid had one, and Mikki still owns hers! Rolls stamped on back of photos taken in 1948. "80" roll taken Jan - May 30. "839" started May 30 at Sandstone wedding, stopped and restarted late Sept - Oct. "D71" about 7 photos in June and July. "11" started about July 28 to mid Sept. "79" covered a trip to Northern Minnesota last half of Sept.
1948-2
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Mickey 1103 Hawthorne January 48" "80"
1948-3
( comments) Mom wrote on back "January, 1948 Grandpa's fishhouse on Lake Geneva Swenson's barn in background " "80" Don, Mikki being held by Allen, Ken See 1929 Al Ljung Album photos for more information on Swenson barn. Grandpa would spear fish in this house. Mostly he speared Nothern Pike. The sled leaning against it is to move the fishhouse around and on and off the lake. Note it has a small chimney connected to a stove for heat inside.
1948-4
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Spring 1948" Dad wrote Marge (Lund) (Alice's daughter) & Stuart Swanson" Their daughter Diane Leigh Swanson was born Dec 13 1947 So I am guessing this is her baptism which is usually about 2 months after birth so about Feb 15, 1948.
1948-5
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Spring 1948" Alice, Marjorie Lund Swanson, Mrs. Swanson The babtism of Diane Swanson born Dec 13, 1947
1948-6
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Mrs Swanson Stuart & Diane Leigh Spring 1948" Marge had written "Daddy's Girl" Mrs Swanson is Stuart's mother. Looks like Diane's Babtism because of long dress.
1948-7
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Doug & family in Duluth at Howard's apt. Connie Sharron March, 1948" From other photo this is March 14, 1948.
1948-8
( comments) Mom wrote on back "April 1948 Duluth" "80" Marge, Connie, Doug Hanson, Sharron Here Irene mislabled one of her own photos, but I am pretty sure this is March 14, 1948 (Note trees have no leaves)
1948-9
( comments) Mom wrote on back "April 14 1948 Duluth Doug Allen Howard Alice Marge Irene holding Sharron Connie" I believe these square photos were taken by Agnes, and that she later sent copies to Irene. Irene labeled her photos (the rectangular ones with wavy edge as happening in March. Later when she got Agnes photos I believe she mistakenly labeled them in April. Also there are photos with Easter baskets and Easter was March 28 so I am saying this is March 14.
1948-10
( comments) Mom wrote on back "April 15 1948 Duluth" Note they drove Myrtle up which means kids left at home - probably with Grandpa. Looks like they are headed home. This is March 15, 1948 (not April)
1948-11
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Near Easter April 29 1948 1103 Hawthorne" Don with Easter basket. Note another camera on concrete. I believe this photo taken by Agnes (see ZL9 670 for photo with Agnes and camera) and the camera in the photo is the Ljung camera. Easter was March 28 in 1948 so this is March 29 instead of April 29.
1948-12
( comments) Mom wrote on back "April 29 1948" Ken, Irene, Mikki, Don March 29 1948. Photo by Agnes In a similar but fuzzier (hence tossed) photo probably taken by Ljung camera Dad wrote "Displaced Family?" Mom correctly dated it as March 29, 1948.
1948-13
( comments) Mom wrote on back "April 29 1948 Leaving for Denver" Someone much later added "Doug & Marge" Marge holding Sharron, Doug and Connie with Easter basket. Since Don's Easter basket in previous photo is similar, I am guessing they were both purchased this year (gift from Doug and Marge?) At any rate, the Ljungsters used baskets like these for many years. Again March 29,1948.
1948-14
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Doug & family March 29, 1948 Leaving for Denver 1103 Hawthorne Dup""80" Same pose, different camera. March 29, 1948
1948-15
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Howard & Agnes Doug & family March 1948 1103 Hawthorne" "80" Howard, Agnes with camera (I guess she she was taking the square photos), Sharron being held by Marge, Connie, Doug. March 29
1948-16
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Marge & Sharron April, 1948 Leaving for Denver" "80" This is March 29, 1948 despite Mom's label.
1948-17
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Connie Apple March, 1948 Leaving for Denver 1103 Hawthorne" "80" March 29, 1948
1948-18
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Doug March 29 1948 Taking off for Denver 1103 Hawthorne" "80" Mom got it right here!
1948-19
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Spring, 1948 1103 Hawthorne Irene and Mickey" "80" Mom is on Don's trike and Mikki is on Ken's. Trees look like April, 1948
1948-20
( comments) Someone wrote on back "April 48 "Mickie" & "Cauttie" My guess is that Cauttie is Claudia Johnson. She would be one year old in April. They lived on edge of town then and this could be their back yard.
1948-21
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Allen by memorial to those who died in Hinkley fire May 1948" "80" In Wikipedia "On Saturday, September 1, 1894 between the hours of 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., a great firestorm consumed and destroyed Hinckley and 5 smaller communities, namely Mission Creek, Sandstone, Miller, Partridge and Pokegama." "80" indicates that Mom and Dad stopped here before the wedding. So May 29 or even early May 30, 1948.
1948-22
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Grace Lutheran Church at Sandstone May 30, 1948" "80" This is last of 80 roll. Eleanore the bride

( comments) Mom wrote on back "Mrs Swanson Ardy Harriet Swanson Gloria Bjorklund Eleanore's bridesmaids Sandstone May 30, 1948" "839" I imagine Mrs Swanson is the groom's mother and Harriet Swanson is his sister. Ardy is Ardyce Lund (Eleonore's sister)

( comments) Fran wrote on back "Fran'n' fam' Summer 1948" Photo sent to Ljung's Order is Fran, Donna, Alice Joy, Herb Jr
1948-37
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Alice Joy and Donna Summer 1948" Alice Joy on left. Looks like Lincoln Park Zoo. Photo sent to Ljung's
1948-38
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Aunt Mathilda & kids June, 1948 1103 Hawthorne" "D71" Mathilda is Irene's mother's sister and she is holding Mikki, Ken and Don on Ken's trike I believe Mom has date wrong. Looking at roll numbers and other photos, I believe all of these Mathilda and Ording photos are about July 28 and not June 28. So assume this is like July 25
1948-39
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Aunt Mathilda June 1948 1103 Hawthorne" "D71" Don, Mathilda, Irene, Ken. Again assume July 25.
1948-40
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Mrs Ording & Aunt Mathilda June, 1948 at Ording's" "D71" This Mrs Ording must be Rev Ordings wife who is also the mother of Ted Ording. June 28, 1948 from next photo Assume July 28, 1948
1948-41
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Donnie, Gregg Palm, Mickey, Kenny at Ording's June 1948" "D71" June 28, 1948 No, assume July 28.
1948-42
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Margaret Ording Palm & Gregg June 1948 at 722 Kenwood" "D71" So my guess is that Margaret Ording is wife of Ted Ording (or maybe his brother Karl ). No, July 28.
1948-43
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Donnie & Kenny at Ording's 722 Kenwood June 1948" "D71" June 28, 1948. No July 28, 1948
1948-44
( comments) Mom wrote on back "June 28, 1948 At Ordings 722 Kenwood Mickey & Gregg Palm" "11" Oh Oh, your Mom is going to be mad. Incidentally this is the photo that convinces me the date is like July 28, 1948 and not June 28. I think this is the first "11" photo. The other Ording photos are D71. My birthday is also D71 therefore roll 11 must start after my birthday. Also there are other photos of Mom's aunts visiting in Aug.
1948-45
( comments) Mom wrote on back "July 30, 1948 At Edythe's Arlys Petey Arlou Donnie Mickey Kenny Ardelle" "11" So Arlys starts back row and Mickey starts front row. This would be Mikki's 2nd birthday.
1948-46

1948-49
( comments) Mom wrote on back "August 5, 1948 Donnie, Lenita & Carl Jants" "11" I remember that Carl used the ladder to "walk" He would stand on it like I am, and then rotate the ladder to move forward.
1948-50
( comments) Mom wrote on back "August 5, 1948 Carl Jants Kenny Mickey" "11" My guess is that Carl is the son of Clara. Note the Missouri license plate which jibes since Clara lived in Missouri in 1939.
1948-51
( comments) Mom wrote on back "August 5, 1948" "11" From other photos in this series, I believe this is Gust Jants and Clara Olson Jants. She is a sister of Emma - Irene's Mom)
1948-52
( comments) Mom wrote on back "August 5, 1948 Lenita & Verniece" "11" My guess is this is grandchild of Clara and the wife and child of Carl Jants
1948-53
( comments) Mom wrote on back "August 29, 1948 Motorcycle Meet at Fairgrounds Mickey" "11" Late August is during County Fair, so this is probably the Sunday afternoon Grandstand show.
1948-54
( comments) Mom wrote on back "August 29, 1948 Motorcycle Meet at Fairgrounds Howard, Marie, Bill, Agnes, Donnie, Allen, Floyd Bolin, Stanley B. & Carl" "11"Marie, Agnes and Donnie are in second row, rest in front row. Floyd Bolin (cousin of Allen) owned the Dutch Girl Dairy and Stanley is his son, Carl worked at the Dairy.
1948-55
( comments) Mom wrote on back "August 31, 1948 Aunt Marie 1103 Hawthorne" "11" It appears 3 aunts of Irene all visited summer of 1948. Strange that there are no photos of them together.
1948-56
( comments) Mom wrote on back "August 31, 1948 Marie Mickey, Kenny 1103 Hawthorne" "11"
1948-57
( comments) Mom wrote on back "September, 1948 Grandpa and the kids" Dad labeled as "Plugged storm sewer" "11" Order left to right is Don, Grandpa, Ken, Mikki. Grandpa is trying to unplug drain with stick. This is our corner of 11th (which was just gravel) and Hawthorne (paved I think) The "11" roll indicates that it was first half of Sept, 1948 unless "11" roll is just reprints. Note their is a loose "960" and Mom wrote "Summer 1948 Grandpa & the Ljungsters explore Curb Lake at 1103 Hawthorne. In album ZL9 there is a reprint of this photo (has roll "960" which is a singleton). I have discarded that copy. Looking at size of Mikki I go with late summer or September 1948.
1948-58
( comments) Mom wrote on back " "Old Man Sandstone" September 1948" "79" You can see this from Lund house.. I believe Mom and Dad were celebrating their 6th wedding anniversary by revisiting the North Shore where they went on their honeymoon. It is clear from photos that the kids were left at home. Dad used to keep a trip expense log and from that log they left home Sat Sept 18 and they left Sandstone Monday 9/20. All the dates from this trip are from log. My guess is these Sandstone photos were Sandstone Sunday Sept 19, 1948.
1948-59
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Rocks along Kettle River at Sandstone September 1948" "79" Probably Sun Sept 19, 1948
1948-60
( comments) No info. "79" stamped on back. From position next to a copy of an Sept 1948 photo of Mom along Kettle River (also has 79 stamp) I assume this is Irene in Sept 1948. A duplicate of this (also 79) has written by Mom "September, 1948 Climbing rocks by Kettle River in Sandstone"
1948-61
( comments) Mom wrote on back "On the rocks at Sandstone along the Kettle River September 1948" "79" stamped on back. Irene Sept 19

1948-63
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Cabin at Virginia Lodge September 1948" "79" This is the exact (or very similar to) cabin they stayed in on their honeymoon. They checked in at Virginia Lodge on Mon Sept 20 and checked out Thur morning Sept 23. I am guessing this is after they checked in Sept 20. Incidentally the Lodge cost $3 per night.
1948-64
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Sand Lake Virginia Lodge September 1948" "79" Amazingly, Dad playing with a cat. Guess Sept 20.
1948-65
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Sand Lake at Virginia Lodge September 1948" "79" Guess first full day at lake. So Tues Sept 21, 1948.
1948-66
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Beach at Virginia Lodge September 1948" "79" Dad labeled these photos "Sand Lake Revisit Honeymoon" Sept 21.
1948-67
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Lake bottom, taken from dock on Sand Lake at Virginia Lodge September 1948" "79" Guess Sept 21
1948-68
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Park at Moose Lake September, 1948" "79" Irene building fire. Moose Lake is close to Sand Lake. I am guessing Wed Sept 22, 1948.
1948-69
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Park in Moose Lake September 1948" "79" Irene Sept 22
1948-70
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Park at Moose Lake September 1948" "79" Allen Sept 22.
1948-71
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Inside cabin at Virginia Lodge September 1948" "79" Irene knitting. Mom appears to wearing same clothes as at Moose Lake picnic so assume Sept 22, 1948.
1948-72
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Suspension Bridge Jay Cooke State Park September 1948" "79" On Thur Sept 23 they drove to Duluth and Jay Cooke is on the way so assume this is Sept 23.
1948-73

1948-76
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Model of Viking ship in Leif Ericsson Park Duluth September 1948" "79" They stayed in Duluth with Howard and Agnes from Thur 23 and drove home Sunday Sept 26. The log indicates that Sat Sept 25 they drove to Two Harbors. It would have been easy to stop at Leif Erikson Park on the North side of Duluth on the way up North. So guess Sept 25 in the morning (Note long morning shadows) This ship was made in 1926 and 3 "Vikings" sailed it from Norway to Duluth. It fell into disrepair and supposedly has been preserved and is once again in the park, but Google Earth doesn' seem to show it.
1948-77
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Near Gooseberry Falls North Shore Drive September 1948" "79" Irene Gooseberry Falls is up North and so this is almost certainly Sat Sept 25. Note this is last of "79" roll
1948-78
( comments) Mom wrote on back "At Gooseberry Falls North Shore Drive September 1948" "839" Howard, Agnes, Irene This is at start of "839" roll Sat Sept 25.
1948-79
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Gooseberry Falls North Shore Drive September 1948" "839" Sat Sept 25.
1948-80
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Cabin at Virginia Lodge on Sand Lake September 1948" "839" Note this is a new roll of film and so this photo comes after all the "79" photos. Irene looking at plants. This photo is interesting. There are 5 "839" photos from May 30 Sandstone wedding. Then in Sept "839" starts again. So did Mom and Dad each have a camera? Or did Dad switch rolls in and out of a single camera (I used to do that when I had different film types - different ISO numbers for example) Not clear why Dad would do that with simple box cameras. So if they had two cameras then this could have been taken back on Sept 20 when they were staying at the Lodge. If they had a single camera it is more likely taken after Sept 25. If so I would guess they made a small detour on their way home Sun Sept 26 and snapped this photo then. The only reason to return would be that they forgot something there. Is this Mom looking for something she lost near the cabin? I hope she found it. Your choice as to when this was taken.
1948-81

( comments) Mom wrote on back "The Ljung sters October 1948 1103 Hawthorne" "839" Only time I have seen Ljung sters with a space. Mikki, Don, Ken. Dad made the steam shovel and the two trucks and also the caterpiller. Note Plymouth in back.
1948-85
( comments) Mom wrote on back "October 1948 1103 Hawthorne" "839" Mikki, Don, Ken The sand must have been for some project as it was dumped in front of garage in driveway. As of 2019 Ken still has the steam shovel (still works) and his truck. Don still has his truck.
1948-86
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Plymouth October 1948 1103 Hawthorne" Dad wrote on photo "33 Plymoth" "839" `There was a second print of this (also "839") in ZL9 740 now discarded. Note the frame behind car. That was used to support engine when it was installed.
1948-87
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Roger" Alice probably wrote "Fall 1948"
1948-88
( comments) Only info on photo "Mr and Mrs August Anderson Nelson 1948" I have no idea who these people are. Not in family tree. I think Nelson means that photo was taken in Nelson MN.
1948-89
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Gregg Palm Christmas 1948" Photo sent to Ljungs. He is part of Ording family
1948-90
( comments) No info, however this is a nice photo of the 5 children of Edythe and Fredolph Hanson. They are Arleen, Arlou, Dwayne, Arlys, and Ardelle. Ardelle was born about 1946 so guess 1948.
