Album: 1946 Al Ljung Album

     Album:Family/Historical photos.:Gramps Allen:1940 Decade:1946 Al Ljung Album
1946-1
( comments) Mom wrote "1946" on back. Ellen Nelson Eilers See also next photo. Assume Jan 1946 (lots of snow!).
1946-2
( comments) Note Fay School 1866 sign. Wikipedia has "Fay School is an independent, coeducational day and boarding school, located on a 66-acre (270,000 m2) campus some 25 miles (40 km) from Boston in Southborough, Massachusetts, and is the oldest junior boarding school in the United States.[2] It has 475 students enrolled from Pre-Kindergarten through grade 9" So Ellen Eilers must have taught there before she got married. Jan 1946.
1946-3
( comments) Dad labeled "Ellen Eilers" On back Mom wrote"1945" However I think this photo was taken same day as Jan 1946 photos of Ellen Eilers. So Jan 1946 (Although all 3 could also be Dec 1945)
1946-4
( comments) Letter from Ellen Eilers to Allen mailed Aug 25, 2014. The photo was missing, but on envelope Dad wrote Reunion Pix so maybe some old reunion photo. Ellen gives thoughts of teaching country vs city kids and poor vs rich. Put in 1946 with photos of Ellen at Fay School.
1946-5
( comments) Letter from Ellen Eilers to Allen mailed Aug 25, 2014. But put in 1946
1946-6
( comments) Mom wrote onback "Kenny taken by Grandma Ida 1103 Hawthorne January 1946" While Mom was in TB Sanaterium and Dad was still in Army in NY.
1946-7
( comments) These 7 photos were in Irene's photo wallet that she carried for ID. I will put all in 1972 as she was using it when she had her stroke. I will also put individual photos in appropriate year. 1972 On back Mom wrote "I like this one the best January 1946 Kenny 11 mo. Taken in his play box"
1946-8
( comments) These 6 photos are the backs of ZL99 286 - 291.
1946-9
( comments) "4" stamped on back With 1947 summer photos but no info. Looks like Ken This is a duplicate of the previous photo that was in album ZL9. I keep it only as an example of how incorrect order can be in albums as this is really Jan 1 946 not summer of 1947.
1946-10
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Kenny 1103 Hawthorne January 1946" "4" stamped on back.
1946-11
( comments) "Kenny 1103 Hawthorne Winter 1945 - 46" "I" stamped (blurred could be 4) About this time Mom was in the TB sanatarium and Ken was living with Grandpa and Grandma. Assume Jan 1946.
1946-12
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Kenny - January, 1946 1103 Hawthorne" Someone else (Ida?) wrote "These are in the crib all 11 mo." "I" blurred.
1946-13
( comments) Dad wrote on back "Allen Ljung & Jack Bailey's Dog at house on Nokomis St" I think Mom put it here in the album next to Jan 1946 photos of Ken because she thought the photos of Ken looked like Dad. Oct 1919
1946-14
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Somewhere in Ohio - Al & I enroute home from Orangeburg March 1946" "s6" From Irene's diary this is either March 19 or 20, 1946.
1946-15
( comments) Dad labeled "Albin and large northern pike" No other information, and was in album with photos from many years. I don't recognize house. Guess March 1946.
1946-16
( comments) Dad labeled this photo and next "Fredolph and Edythe Hanson Children" I believe it is l to r: Dwayne (Petey), Arlou, and Arlene. There is a photo of Arleen in Albin's album (ZL11 035) and this photo is taken same date (note Arleen's dress and woodpile) Thus this is about April 1946.
1946-17
( comments) From Albin's album. Someone wrote on back "Arleen 8 yr's" Probably Fredolf behind her. Arleen was born about 1938 so assume April 1946.
1946-18
( comments) Mom wrote on back "May 1946 Pearl Donnie" "B53" The house appears to be the rented house. Had to be after May 7, since Donnie was in Sandstone before that.
1946-19
( comments) Mom wrote on back "May 1946 Mildred Vleck" "B53" Judging from Don's clothes this is same day as photo with Pearl. Dad labeled identical print (ZL4 366 now discarded "Mildred Velchea hired girl 1946" Whoa! We had a nanny? Yes, that is Don and Ken standing on a pedestal that was in side lawn of house on NE side of Alexandria. Mom had returned from the TB sanatorium and was pregnant with Mikki and so she needed help. I believe Mildred Vleck is same as Mildred Johnson. Mildred was hired girl on Hanson farm in Jan 1937. I assume Vleck is her married name. I have also put the 1937 photo in 1946 just to show they are same woman. Has to be after May 7 as Donnie was staying with Alice in Sandstone before that.
1946-20
( comments) On back "Mildred Johnson 1937" In Irene's diary Mildred is living with Hanson's and helping with cooking, laundry etc. Goes with next photo and diary mentions Mildred on Jan 31, 1937.
1946-21
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Donnie & Kenny Carl Forsgren place May 1946" "72" stamped on back. Probably same day as photo with Pearl, but maybe different camera.
1946-22
( comments) Mom wrote on back "June 22, 1946" "72" Taken at Fahlun Church. However, I don't recognize anyone.
1946-23
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Aug. 25, 1946" "15" Dad in his army uniform. Despite what Mom wrote, I think this is July or even Memorial Day. He wore that uniform in Memorial Day Parades until he died. Don still has the uniform. Also the "15" on back seems to say it is not July when "3"'s started. Assume Thursday May 30, 1946 (Then called Decoration Day)
1946-24
( comments) Mom wrote on back "August 25, 1946" "15" Dad in his army uniform. He is on north side of house by driveway I think this is Memorial Day 1946
1946-25
( comments) Dad labeled "Annie Schelin, Albin and Lawrence S" Annie is a sister of Ida and Lawrence is her son. This photo goes with ZL4 348 - 350 (2 duplicated so discarded). Note car in background plus Albin's clothes. I believe these 4 photos are a Sherlin family gathering after Ida died June 26, 1946. Possibly July 4, 1946.
1946-26
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Summer 1946 Albin" "S 7" Ken, Albin, Allen, Don Guess early July (July 4th picnic?) 1946
1946-27
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Linda Rassat Grandpa Kenny Summer 1946" "S37" Linda is a daughter of Margaret Schelin, and Margaret is a daughter of Annie Sherlin. Annie is a sister of Ida. Hence Linda is a second cousin to Ken etc. Could this be a get together of Sherlin family in July after Ida died (June 26, 1946)?
1946-28
( comments) Dad labeled "Grandpa, Ken and ?" Mom wrote on a duplicate of this photo in Z12 "Erickson place on Lake Geneva" Gust Erickson had a farm near Albin's farm so it is probably his farm. He is married to Christine Severson a sister to Albin's mother Mary Severson. So Albin, Ken and Linda Rassat. Guess July 4, 1946.
1946-29
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Donnie Kenny Ronnie at Evvy's July 1946" "72" Their home is on 13th Ave West. I am going with early July 1946. Fran and her family arrived July 7 and I suspect they would have been in this photo if they were around.
1946-30
( comments) Mom wrote on back "July 16, 1946" "15" stamped on back. Don's 3rd birthday.
1946-31
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Ardys & Kenny Summer 1946 City Park" "10" July 16, 1946 from other photos.
1946-32
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Alice, Donna, Herbie, Donnie, Kenny, Ardys July 16, 1946 Alex City Park" "10" Alice is Alice Joy, Herbie is sitting on grass. Don is behind Ken. Ardys is Ardyce Lund age 14. Don's 3rd birthday.
1946-33
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Kenny Summer 1946 Alex City Parek" "10" July 16,1946 from other photos.
1946-34
( comments) See writing by Mom "Ellen 1946?" The frame appears to be handmade, perhaps by Ellen Eilers. Looks like other 1946 photo of Ellen so put in 1946.
1946-35
( comments) Ellen and Don Eilers and guests. July 21, 1946
1946-36
( comments) Mom wrote on back "July 21, 1946 Ellen & Don Eilers Rev C. E. Hanson" This might be the Nelson church. Clearly their wedding
1946-37
( comments) Wedding Party. See next photo for names. I believe that Minnie Nelson and maybe Margaret Nelson are sisters of Ellen. Art Eilers is probably a brother of Don. July 21, 1946
1946-38
( comments) Back of Wedding Party (ZL9 109)c
1946-39
( comments) Ellen and Don Eilers July 21, 1946 Note small trailer house in back. Don thinks that is their first home. See next photo going into trailer.
1946-40
( comments) Ellen and Don Eilers July 21, 1946 Don carring Ellen over threshold of trailer.
1946-41
( comments) Dad labeled this page of photos "1st house after war NE corner Alex" Mom wrote on back "Donna, Alice Joy, Donnie, Kenny , Herbie July, 1946" "3" Order left to right, top to bottom. You can see that we were pretty much at edge of town. Somewhere out in back the Soo Line RR passes through on way out of Alex.
1946-42
( comments) Mom wrote onback "Kenny Summer 1946" "3" Outside our home Assume late July, 1946
1946-43
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Kenny Summer 1946" "3" stamped on back. Looks like back yard of house. Note Model T parked. I beleive it is Dad's 1926 Model T. I don't remember it ever being at 1103 so Dad probably sold it around this time. Guess July 1946
1946-44
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Donnie Irene Mickey August, 1946 Carl Forsgren place" "3" We were renting house so Carl Forsgren must be landlord. I think this photo taken same day as ZL9 546 (Mikki and Mom at same place outside house. That photo says July, but Irene's diary has her in the hospital July 30 to Aug 8. Assume this is just after getting home on Aug 8, 1946. Note Don doesn't look overwhelmed by this new intrusion! Possibly 1st photo of Mikki?
1946-45
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Mickey & Irene July 1946" "3" Actually I think this photo taken same day as ZL9 543 and that it is about Aug 8, when Mom came home. So probably her first photo that actually shows her face.
1946-46
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Doug Summer 1946" "211" From Irene's diary Doug was in Alex March 24 - April 10 and again July 27 to Sept 1. From trees and Mom's "summer" this is clearly from second trip. Thus August 1946
1946-47
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Summer 1946" "211" For an identical photo (ZL4 343 now discarded) Dad at the top of the page wrote "Home in Alexandria again" For this photo he labeled "1946 Albin building garage at 1103 H. St." Don, Ken (by Grandpa), Albin Guess August 1946.
1946-48
( comments) Dad labeled "Farm east of Miltona" I have no idea why we have these photos. My guess is that it is some "tourist attraction" because it is made of rock. note rock sign above open door. Guess 1946.
1946-49
( comments) 1946
1946-50
( comments) 1946
1946-51
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Donnie August 1946 Carl Forsgren place" "3" Back yard of our rental house.
1946-52
( comments) Mom wrote on back "September 1946" "11" There is a "3" reprint of this. Not clear which was original and which reprint. Ken and Don in sandbox built by Dad. I think this was back side (East) of house.
1946-53
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Mickey's Baptism Sept (?) 1946" "3"
1946-54
( comments) Mom wrote onback "Summer 1946" "3" Howard and Agnes visiting our rented home in Alex Looks like fall and Irene's diary indicates Howard and Agnes visited Sept 21 to Sept 24 when they all went to Wadena. So assume about Sept 22 1946 ("3" indicates not spring) Not clear when we moved out of this house, but it must be sometime around here.
1946-55
( comments) Dad wrote on photo "1916 Ford etc. Dodge Tran REO R. End" Dad wrote on a loose duplicate "Late fall 1946" Note it has been rebuilt since the 1942 photos. Note it appears to have the Harley Davidson motorcycle gas tank that we see in ZL5 333!. This is 1103, and the building next to tractor is the unfinished new garage. Nov 1946
1946-56
( comments) Mom wrote on back "November 1946" someone else wrote "Oct 13" "3" A duplicate loose copy ("3") has Mom writing Novemver then crossed out and replaced with December" This is in living room of 1103. I believe it was a possible Christmas photo for 1946. I think the Oct 13 date comes possibly from Mikki's baptism as she is wearing her baptism dress. But I don't think it is her baptism as we may have moved into 1103 later than that. I believe it was a photo taken in Nov and then used as our Christmas photo. Don, Mikki, Ken See next photo. But it conceivabley could even be Christmas Eve 1946 and Don and Ken are showing off new Christmas gift clothes (but then why no Christmas tree in usual corner?) . Nov, 1946.
1946-57
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Donnie Mickey Kenny December 1946" "3" Mom wrote on the back of a poor copy of this photo "Oct 13 1946 Don Mickey Ken Grandmother Emma's wedding dress (remade into) --> Mother Irene's confirmation dress --> Mickey's baptismal gown" So this could be when Mikki was baptized. Oct 13, 1946. But I sort of believe it was not her baptism, but later in Nov, 1946.
1946-58
( comments) Start Album ZL3 scan (album also has 1989 -1990 before and more decade 90's after) Mom wrote on back "Pastor and Mrs Rudolph Nilsson abt 1946"
1946-59
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Christmas 1946" I believe this is C. V. Anderson (owner of Anderson Funeral Home and maybe Anderson Furniture) and his wife. See ZL9 111 in 1955 for identification. (Also Mom put this in album next to a 1950 photo of Anderson Furniture). Christmas 1946.
1946-60
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Betty Jean Basnight 5 months 1946" There is a late 1945 photo with a baby Betty. So this is probably like Feb 1946.
