Mom wrote on back "Donnie 1010 Douglas December 1943" Also note "12/43" on front of photos. On a reprint Mom wrote on back "January 11, 1944" At a latter time Dad crossed out the Jan date and added "December 1943 Donnie - 1010 Douglas Alex Alice and Bills home" I imagine Dad corrected it because he knew Don was back in Tappan by Jan 11. Note the tub is exactly the same as the tub Roger had a bath in 1939! (ZL5 083) Note, the calendar on the wall appears to have two months and the shape fits Jan-Feb 1944 better than Nov-Dec 1943. Also note we have a similar black edged photo at Lund's house that is labeled New Year's Day. So maybe Mom really meant Jan 1 and not Jan 11! Assume Jan 1, 1944.

"49" photo. No info, but Mom wrote on back of identical print (ZL9 446 now discarded) "And send this one back, too" "49" Probably shortly after Irene and Don went back to Tappan. (Probably same day as photos with Priscilla) On a reprint of this photo with 112 stamped on back Mom wrote "February '44 6 1/2 months" Assume about Feb 1, 1944.

Mom wrote on back "Donnie & Irene January or February 1944" "3" stamped on back. Looks like a double exposure. On a reprint of this photo (stamped 112) Mom wrote "6 1/2 months old February '44" In yet another "112" reprint Mom wrote on back "A dumb double exposure but it has a little something to be seen. I surely look goony - I didn't want to be on but Roger (our "landlord") thought I wanted the picture of both of us. It should have been just Donnie. Feb. 1944" Hence about Feb 1, 1944.

Doug (handwritting similar to Irene's) wrote on back "3 - 12 -44 waiting for the bus, to Phoenix from Wms. Field" Wikipedia has "Williams Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force (USAF) base, located in Maricopa County, Arizona east of Chandler, and about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Phoenix." This is Doug and Alyce Larson. See Nov 1942 photo (ZL9 042) for identification of Alyce. They must have been serious. I wonder what happened? March 12, 1944. Note that is the day he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant.

Mom labeled the page with following 8 photos "A day at Bronx Zoo, N.Y. with Jerry & Del Clark" "171" stamped on back) From Don's baby book this is Sunday March 26, 1944. Sgt and Mrs. Delbert Clark invited family to go along with them. From a duplicate of this photo (also "171") in Albin's Album, Mom had written that "This is part of what they call the African Plains. It's a huge enclosure fixed all like both natives & animals live there."

"24" on back. Clearly Priscilla and Donnie. On the back of a duplicate "24" Mom wrote "Lovella & I took our babies out walking. Looks like they nearly fell asleep. The other baby is Priscilla, about 14 months old. Can you see Donnie! Other "24" photos are spring 1944 and so this looks like April 1944. Thus Pricilla born about Feb 1943 and she looks older than Don so sounds right. Note a "May" (Next one - ZL9 456) photo says Priscilla is then 13 months. But I believe both are same day as Priscilla and Don clothing appears same as next photo so they could be same day. If so both would be April 1944. so Assume about April 15, 1944 for both.
|
1944-32
( comments)
See ZL 448 for back of this photo. A "24" photo. Mom also labeled photo "Priscilla Don ____ Hartmann" Also note house in background is Tappan House we lived in. Priscilla, Donnie (age 9 1/2 months), Ruth Ann. Note the baby carriage in previous photo is on far left of this photo. I think they are same day which would mean April from trees. Thus Don is more like 8 1/2 or 9 months and Mom is off by a few weeks. Thus about April 15, 1944.

Doug wrote on back "4 - 25 -44 Lizzie - front of 1010 Douglas" Lizzie is Alyce Larson. Dad's Model A (apparently it was left in Alexandria for the war). I think the A sticker is a war gasoline ration classification. April 25, 1944.

Our room is the last two windows, upstairs, of course." There is another "24" photo (ZL9 456) of this house and and I believe it was April 15, 1944, Because of leaves on trees I believe this photo is the same day as the next two photos of Don and hence about May 1, 1944
