Album: 1943 Al Ljung Album

     Album:Family/Historical photos.:Gramps Allen:1940 Decade:1943 Al Ljung Album
1943-1
( comments) Allen 's label is "L - R front row - Allen Ljung, Peterson, McDonald - L. back, Legler Downtown Macon, Ga from Camp Wheeler" See photo ZL9 059 for info on first names. Clearly same day as ZL99 Jan 1, 1943 photo.
1943-2
( comments) Back of ZL9 058. Note spelling L'Jung. ZL9 58 is a another print of Album 1 030 photo. I have discarded 058
1943-3
( comments) Mom labeled "New year's Day Macon , Ga" Allen
1943-4
( comments) Appear to be same 5 as with Allen in ZL9 058. 1/1/43.
1943-5
( comments) Again same 5. 1/1/43
1943-6
( comments) Two of the five. 1/1/43
1943-7
( comments) Mom wrote on back "January 1, 1943 Macon, Georgia Dup" "50"
1943-8
( comments) This is the envelope Dad turned in the Jan 1, 1943 photos! Note 1 - 3 -43 date. The writing is not Dad's so probably some clerk. Apparently cost $1.63 to get 6 prints of each photo of one roll. Probably one each for the 6 photographed.
1943-9
( comments) On back "Left to right Pvt Alfred Legler Pvt Allen Ljung Pvt Earl Raiter 1/31/43"
1943-10
( comments) No info. Some Army celebration. Allen is squatting in lower right. I might recognize two of the men with glasses in the 1/1/43 photo in Macon Georgia. Could this be end of boot camp celebration? Guess Feb 1943.
1943-11
( comments) No info. Looks like winter and some coast. Lets guess Feb 1943.
1943-12
( comments) Mom labeled "Old-time fire alarm near Tappan" This is first of 9 "sightseeing" photos around Tappan, NY. All taken on one day. From trees it looks like March 1943 (so before the April 1943 photos even though later in album. Irene with hammer.
1943-13
( comments) Mom labeled "The 76 House" A famous old tavern that still exists in Tappan. Assume March 1943
1943-14
( comments) Mom labeled "Geo Washington Oak, Tappan" Assume March 1943
1943-15
( comments) Probably near Tappan NY March 1943
1943-16
( comments) Allen probably at some Revolutionary War cemetery near Tappan. Assume March 1943
1943-17
( comments) More sightseeing. 3/43
1943-18
( comments) Allen with some old cannon probably near Tappan. 3/43
1943-19
( comments) Idlewild Lake is a fishing resort in Old Tappan NJ which is close to Tappan NY. Irene. 3/43
1943-20
( comments) Mom labeled "Andre's Tomb, Tappan" "0 3" stamped on back. Andre is a British Officer hung as a spy. Last photo of sightseeing outing March 1943.
1943-21
( comments) Labeled "Mrs Post Orangeburg NY." "0 3" stamped on back. Allen and Irene lived in Orangeburg NY (near Army base). She is probably a neighbor. Dad would tell stories of a big dog that would occasionally run over Don when he was small. Perhaps this is the dog? I am dating this April 1943 because it was in album with April 1943 photos and because it has same "0 3" stamped as the April 1943 Tappan outing. The strange thing is that we were living in Tappan then and Orangeburg later (Ken was born there) So I am not confident about dates.
1943-22
( comments) Mom wrote "Vera & Dolon Hamm" "337" on back Assume April 1943.
1943-23
( comments) "Roger Dowding 1943" Army friends. They visited us several times in the '50's. Assume April 1943
1943-24
( comments) "Doris Dowding 1943" Assume April 1943
1943-25
( comments) Mom labeled "Dick, Mary & Joseph Nickels" From labels of other photos taken at same time we know this is Nyack, New York in Spring 1943. From trees it looks like April.
1943-26
( comments) Mom labeled "Nyack, New York" Allen and from previous photo Joseph. Note Dad now has a different hat - a new rank? I still have the hat as part of Dad's army uniform. April 1943.
1943-27
( comments) Allen April 1943
1943-28
( comments) Irene and Allen. April 1943.
1943-29
( comments) Mom labeled "Spring of 1943" Allen April 1943
1943-30
( comments) Allen and Irene. Assume April 1943.
1943-31
( comments) Irene April 1943. Note assuming this is mid April, Mom is 6 months pregnant with Don in this photo!
1943-32
( comments) This scan is not out of focus. Original photo is out of focus. The back proudly announces this is a pat pending Photoframe taken by Photomatic. Made in USA International Mutoscope Reel Co. New York City. I assume they are out of business.... Allen Ljung perhaps in 1943
1943-33
( comments) Probably Arlene Hanson (daughter of Edythe Erickson Hanson) May 1943.
1943-34
( comments) Mom labeled "Evy Irene" "22" on back. Dad labeled an identical print (ZL4 336 now tossed) "Evie and Irene planting garden at 1103 Spring 1943" Note this is first photo of the family rhubarb, some of which we still have in IL. From trees looks like May, 1943.
1943-35
( comments) Ida wrote on back "Can you figure out what kind of paper they printed this on. It muist have been too old." Also "22" stamped on back. The plants in window look identical to ZL 434 so assume Mother's Day May 9, 1943.
1943-36
( comments) Ida wrote on back "Taken Mothers Day 1943" Dad labeled an identical print (ZL9 431 now tossed) "Ida Allen Albin" Number "22" stamped on back. Photo is by south side of 1103. Mothers Day was May 9, 1943.
1943-37
( comments) "22" stamped on back. Compare with ZL 432 (Irene and Allen) Clearly taken same day so Mother's Day May 9, 1943
1943-38
( comments) Mom labeled "May 1943" See next photo for what Ida wrote on back. Dad wrote on back of identical print (ZL4 337 now tossed) "First furlough Spring 1943" Irene and Allen Mother's Day (from another photo) May 9, 1943. She would be 7 months pregnant with Don. Interestingly, on a dup of this photo, Mom wrote "Allen, Irene & Donnie" (Clearly written after I was born as they didn't know sex of baby) I don't recognize car (probably Albin's)
1943-39
( comments) What Ida wrote on back of ZL9 432. Note this photo has E29 stamped by processor. Means it was probably a different camera from ZL9 431. My guess is that Irene took photo of Ida, Allen and Albin and that Ida took photo of Irene and Allen and then Ida wrote on back and mailed it to Allen. There was yet another copy of this photo labeled "Dup" by Mom, but it had A5 stamp. May 1943
1943-40
( comments) Dad labeled "'29 Ford Mod "A" coach" Note the Model A is now fully decked out with painted white walls and the painted stripes Also has black license (so it is not 1942 with white plate) In both 1943 and 1944 Minn plates were white letters with black background. I am guessing 1943 (Perhaps May 1943 when Dad was in Alex for furlough).
1943-41
( comments) Delayed registration of birth of Ida. May 25, 1943.
1943-42
( comments) "Ronnie June 1943"
1943-43
( comments) Ronnie Hanson, June 1943
1943-44
( comments) No info with photo. However, Allen is7th from left in back row. On his left shoulder he has the "Ports of Embarcation" Shoulder Insignia of the Army Services Forces. Also his rank is Private First Class. Thus I am pretty certain this is Camp Shanks about the summer of 1943.
1943-45
( comments) The other half of previous photo. I don't know what the flag signifies.
1943-46
( comments) "June 12, 1943" This is Helen Johnson. She married Ed Schroeder on June 12,1943.
1943-47
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Mike Linser and Gladys 1942 (?)" Someone (Dad?) crossed out 1942 and put summer '43. I don't know who they are. Summer '43.
1943-48
( comments) Mom wrote on back "1943 Karlene & _____ Anderson" Then on front she indicates Mary Anderson. Not clear who these are. (Mary Lou Anderson was born about 1945 so probably not her). Summer 1943
1943-49
( comments) On back "'43 Junette Hale." She is granddaughter of Fritz Severson so cousin of Dad.
1943-50
( comments) Dad labeled "Carl A Johnson - Sailor Aircraft engine mechanic" Assume 1943
1943-51
( comments) no info, but clearly Carl Johnson. Goes with previous photo. Assume 1943.
1943-52
( comments) No info, but clearly goes with ZL4 338. Carl Johnson, 1943 assumed.
1943-53
( comments) 807 stamped on back. No other info on this singleton photo. However, it is Carl and probably taken same time as ZL9 photos. Assume 1943.
1943-54
( comments) No info, but clearly goes with ZL4 338. Carl Johnson, 1943 assumed.
1943-55
( comments) No info. Carl Johnson in different uniform. Put with ZL9 144 Assume 1943.
1943-56
( comments) On the back someone wrote"'43 Junette Strandbergs husband, Everest Hale" Looks like south pacific. 1943
1943-57
( comments) Dad wrote on photo "43P Ford Army Truck" Allen in army in NY. Guess 1943
1943-58
( comments) Mom wrote "August 1, 1943" She also labeled "Donnie". On a reprint "007" Mom wrote "August 1, 1943" On a duplicate photo Mom wrote "August, 1943 Donovan Allen 3 weeks old" Assume the August 1 is correct and so Irene and Don at two weeks old. Mom is back in Alexandria around Don's birth. This may be first photo of Don Same day I visited Great Grandma Olson Note: From my Baby book on page 36 it appears that Irene and Don stayed in Alexandria from about May 1943 to January 1944. We then took a train to Tappan stopping in Chicago to see Weinthalers.
1943-59
( comments) Mom labeled "Britta" Don and his great grandmother Britta. August 1, 1943. From Don's baby book this is Sunday afternoon and Britta was living at Bethany Home in Alexandria On a reprint of this Mom wrote on back "Aug., 1943 Grandma Olson and Donovan Allen (3 wks) That's Roger who's half there! We didn't know he was in the camera range."
1943-60
( comments) Mom wrote on back "August 1, 1943" Another pose of visit to Great Grandma Britta.
1943-61
( comments) Mom wrote on back of duplicate ZL9 066 photo "Donnie 5 weeks old Irene ___ ? Aug 20, 1943" in Alexandria. (the ? is joking about how old Irene might be) On another loose duplicate Mom wrote "August 21, '43 5 wks old. Crooked little smile I'm wearing, isn't it?!" Friday August 20 is exactly 5 weeks and so I am going with that date.
1943-62
( comments) Housewarming for Anna and Gilman. Sept 5, 1943. The next photo is back of this one. The names I recognize are Gilman and Anna Gilberson standing, Agnes Johnson ( head just below left hand of Anna), Pearl Anderson (second from left in front row), Lorrayne Johnson (third in front row), Rueben Bolin (far right) and Margaret Johnson (sort of lying down in right corner).
1943-63
( comments) Back of ZL9 087.
1943-64
( comments) Mom wrote on back "September 10 8 weeks old" Don
1943-65
( comments) Mom wrote on back "September 19, '43 2 months 3 days" Babtismal Day Don and Irene
1943-66
( comments) Mom wrote on back "September 19, '43 Donovan Allen and his sponsors 2 mos 3 days" My God Parents are Alice and Bill Lund. On a duplicate sent to the Lund's and then returned to Mom, Alice wrote "Donnies Baptism Day"
1943-67
( comments) Dad labeled about 8 photos "Scenes around Bremerton" On back of this photo Albin ? has written "fishing docks at west port washington" I am going to put all of these Bremerton photos in 1943,but they easily could be 1944 or 1945.
1943-68
( comments) Onback Albin "fishing fleet West Port washington by Aberdeen at Ocean" It is sw of Bremerton on Pacific Ocean. So this was some outing. 1943.
1943-69
( comments) No info, some blimp. 1943
1943-70
( comments) no info, probably goes with next photo. 1943
1943-71
( comments) Albin on back "fastist boat btween Bremerton and Seattle 1943 to 1945." Put with 1943.
1943-72
( comments) on back "East Bremerton" 1943
1943-73
( comments) Dad labeled "Ida Ljung and some co-workers at Bremerton Shipyard" Ida in the middle. Here we have "Rosie the Riveter" 1943
1943-74
( comments) Dad labeled "Albin and Housing Project crew in Bremerton" Guess 1943
1943-75
( comments) No info, but next to Housing crew photo. Perhaps this was the project Albin worked on. 1943.
1943-76
( comments) Dad labeled "Probably home for Ida and Albin in Bremerton" That is not Ida in photo. Guess 1943.
1943-77
( comments) Someone wrote "Bremerton" on back. This photo was included in the "scenes around Bremerton" and on different page from the previous photo. However, it seems to me that it must be where Albin and Ida lived. Why else take photo? 1943
1943-78
( comments) Albin on back "ducks outside of our cottage in Bremerton Wash. 1943
1943-79
( comments) These 3 are scans of negatives in Albin's album. They were with other Bremerton photos. So my guess is these are people Ida and Albin knew in Bremerton in WWll So put in 1943 with other Bremeton photos.
1943-80
( comments) These 3 are scans of negatives in Albin's album. They were with other Bremerton photos. So my guess is these are people Ida and Albin knew in Bremerton in WWll So put in 1943 with other Bremeton photos.
1943-81
( comments) These 3 are scans of negatives in Albin's album. They were with other Bremerton photos. So my guess is these are people Ida and Albin knew in Bremerton in WWll So put in 1943 with other Bremeton photos.
1943-82
( comments) "Arlou 1943" On back there is a note (not Irene) talking about a Grandma, Marjorie, and Lydia. Arlou Ridder is granddaughter of Britta Olson (Grandma) and daughter of Lydia. Looks like California. 1943.
1943-83
( comments) Someone wrote on back "Paul Richard Arndt 11 weeks old" Mom wrote on back "Jane Crane Arndt's baby abt 1943" Must be Army buddy baby.
1943-84
( comments) See next photo (ZL999 392) for names someone wrote on back. This photo has been cut along right side and is missing some persons. I don't recognize any of the names. Clothes look like WWII. Is this a photo of workers in some plant? Maybe out in Washington where Albin and Ida were during war? Guess 1943.
1943-85
( comments) Back of ZL99 391. Not known who these people are. Guess 1943
1943-86
( comments) Zana Lund Looks like fall 1943 (Oct)
1943-87
( comments) Mom wrote on back "October 16, 1943 3 months old" Donnie and Irene Note Don is wearing Allen's Army hat. However at this time Irene and Don were in Alexandria and I believe Allen was in NY. A reprint of this photo is stamped Nov 1 1943 Browns's Minneapolis Minn. But go with Mom's October 16, 1943 date as that is my actual 3 month birthday!
1943-88
( comments) Mom wrote on back "October 16, 1943 3 months old" ZL9 096 was a duplicate of this. No new info. Irene and Don
1943-89
( comments) Clearly another October 16, 1943 photo. Irene and Don
1943-90
( comments) Mom wrote on back "October 16, 1943 Bonnie and the Donnie - bus" We are in Alexandria and Mom is in front of the Lund home at 1010 Douglas. Compare with April 25, 1944 photo of Doug in front of their house. There is an exact match of the three trees. Note the car parked pointed the "wrong" way across the street.
1943-91
( comments) These 7 photos were in Irene's photo wallet that she carried for ID. I will put all in 1972 as she was using it when she had her stroke. I will also put individual photos in appropriate year. 1972 On back Mom wrote "October 17, 1943 3 months old" On a reprint (red 78" ?) Dad wrote "At Lund's in Alex" Don
1943-92
( comments) These 6 photos are the backs of ZL99 286 - 291.
1943-93
( comments) Mom labeled "October 17 1943 A better view of the lovely baptism dress that Grandma made for Daddy when he was a baby" On back "Brown Photo Service Minneapolis Minn Nov 1 1943" Also red "78" I can not find a photo of Allen wearing this babtism dress, although there are several summer 1919 (ZL4 077 etc) in which Allen has a shorter dress with similar lace at bottom.
1943-94
( comments) Mom wrote on back "October 17, 3 months old" no processing stamp on back. Donnie
1943-95
( comments) Mom wrote "Marge & Stu 1944?" Marjorie Lund and Stewart Swanson. They were married Februrary 7, 1944 so I am guessing this is an engagement photo say about Oct 1943
1943-96
( comments) Dad labeled "'32 Desoto spt. cp. as bought for $10" Dad also wrote "43/44" next to it. Allen with car. See also next scan for the back. This must be behind Tappan house. Myrtle was all fixed by an April 6, 1944 photo so assume fall 1943. At this time Dad was in Tappan by himself.
1943-97
( comments) Mom wrote on back. This is back yard of where they lived in New York. 1943
1943-98
( comments) Mom on back "November 1943 1102 Hawthorne" That is correct 1102 (not 1103) This is the back of the house across the street from 1103. Mom and Don were still in Alexandria from before my birth. Irene and Don lived there for a short while.
1943-99
( comments) See next photo for back of this photo. Alvina, Alice, Aunt Emma (in window), Florence, Helen. Actually I think Mom mistakenly put Aunt Emma instead of Aunt Anna. They are sisters, but Anna Hanson Forsgren has these four girls. She is a sister of A. C. Hanson so these girls are cousins of Irene's. 1943 (assume Dec, a Christmas card) from back.
1943-100
( comments) Back of ZL9 132. Written by Irene's Aunt Anna. Note girl's name spellings different from what I have in family tree. Note how she misspells her niece's name (Jung).
1943-101
( comments) Someone wrote on back "Dorothy Sherlin" Dorothy is a granddaughter of Herman Sherlin and a daughter of George Sherlin, so a cousin to Allen. She was born about 1923 and she looks about 20 here so guess 1943
