     Album:Family/Historical photos.:Gramps Allen:1930 Decade:1939 Al Ljung Album
1939-1
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Agnes Johnson Hanson Dist 15 '39 Liberty School" She taught there. 1939
1939-2
( comments) On the back of the cover Dad added some Liberty School photos after album originally started (with 1942 wedding). Dad wrote on back "Agnes Johnson Hanson Liberty School teacher '39" Agnes is not on photo.
1939-3
( comments) Dad labeled the next 25 photos as "Photos from years when Albin Ljung lived on "Mary Erickson" farm '36 - 39" This photo Dad labeled "Lena and Junette Strandberg" Lena on right is sister of Mary Severson Guess 1939
1939-4
( comments) Dad labeled and on back "Ljungs Home Winter 39 - 40 - Caretakers" This is a postcard photo. This looks like a later commercial advertisement, but put it in 1939.
1939-5
( comments) Dad and I drove around Alexandria July 5, 2010 to photograph places with family history. 320 E 7th Ave. Anderson Funeral Home. 1939
1939-6
( comments) Dad and I drove around Alexandria July 5, 2010 to photograph places with family history. 320 E 7th Ave. Anderson Funeral Home. Albin, Ida and Al lived on second floor of house during one winter. They were custodians of Funeral Home. A hired girl lived on 3rd floor. Someone tried to swipe the Model A during that time. It was parked on street. After that he parked in garage of Elon Hanson (Alex Chief of Police) which was one block away. Put in 1939
1939-7
( comments) Photos scanned by John Martinson 2/25/17 Irene Spruce Center Spring 1939
1939-8
( comments) Don took photos of photos that were at 2010 Hanson Reunion. No info, but Don believes this is Evie and Vernon on their wedding day - April 15, 1939
1939-9
( comments) On folder "Helen 1939 (Johnson)" She was born about 1921 so this could be HS graduation photo. Assume June 1939
1939-10
( comments) This is cover of album ZL6. It is Irene's trip out to California in June 1939.
1939-11
( comments) Just an example of photos and labeling inside ZL6. Note Irene Labeled most photos.
1939-12
( comments) This sheet of paper was folded up inside album ZL6. The numbers correspond to the order of photos in the album. Note that Irene appears to have the order incorrect. For example #10 is in souteastern Wyoming, # 11 is Salt Lake City in Utah. But then there are a series of photos in Yellowstone (Wyoming) followed by photos in Oregon and California. Nobody would really drive that way! I have scanned the photos the way I believe they drove. With the exception of 9 small purchased commercial photos of Yellowstone I scanned every photo in the album. From the stampings on the back one can tell that the photos were processed at many different dates and at several different processors. My guess is that several persons on the trip had cameras and that they shared photos after processing. Because of this the stampings are of little use in sequencing the photos. There are other photos in other albums apparently taken by Irene that are processed by "Brown" and I suspect the "Brown" photos in this album are Mom's. There are 5 people that start on the trip. Pearl is a good friend of Mom's. However the other 3 - identified only by first names are totally unknown by me. It appears they had two cars. There was a 1938 or 1939 Hudson coupe tha I believe was Pearl's. I think it held only two persons. It appears that the cars separated in Salt Lake City. At least that is the last time the other 3 persons appear. Mom gives no dates in the entire album. However another album has a California photo and has July 1939 on back. Thus I believe the trip was in June and early July 1939.
1939-13
( comments) Stamped "167 Printed Jul 5 1939 The Owl Drug Co" Mom wrote on back "Gus, Clara and family New Florence Missouri" From left Aunt Clara with cat, Uncle Gus, two sons, Irene, another son. The car in back with trunk open looks like a car in the Torrington Wyoming photo. Are Irene and friends about to drive away? Also note that this was processed July 5. I believe the trip lasted beyond Jul 5 (see end of trip photos ) Perhaps Irene processed this out in California so she could give a copy of this photo to Marie Watkins (sister of Clara living in California. Also I have not seen the Owl Drug processor on Minnesota photos) If you goggle "Owl Drug" you find "by the late 1930s the company had dozens of branches across the United States, operating in major cities like New York and Chicago, and especially in the Los Angeles area " Bingo!!June 1939.
1939-14
( comments) Stamped on back "Brown Photo Service Minneapolis, Minn Dec 20 1939" I don't recognize person or place. Now that I have scanned ZL6 (Irene's California trip) I realize this "Brown" photo is an Irene photo. My guess now is that this is the youngest Janz boy. Hence June 1939.
1939-15
( comments) Stamped 219 Mar 1940" Mom wrote on back "Taken at Thummels, Kinsley, Kansas That darn sum!" Mom labeled photo "Carmie Rex Pearl Hugo Irene presents "How Bright the Sun"" Pearl Anderson is a friend of Irene's who went on trip. The others also went on trip.
1939-16
( comments) Stamped "Jul 5 1939""167" Mom labeled "Some of the Thummels of Kinsley, Kansas" The Thummels are not in our family tree. Perhaps friends of one of the other persons on trip. June 1939.
1939-17
( comments) Stamped 219 etc. Mom wrote on back "Dodge City, Kansas. Looks like Unknown,Irene, Pearl. I don't think Unknown is Carmie - Did one of them have a friend or relative in Dodge City? Note sign about 1938 which indicates this is 1939!
1939-18
( comments) Stamped 219 etc. Mom wrote on back ""Boot Hill" Dodge City, Kansas" See bext photo for scan of back .June 1939
1939-19
( comments) This is the back of Mom's photo 5 (see number in upper left). (Photo ZL6 006)Note that this photo was not printed until Mar 1940. Many of the photos are dated that way. There are other photos stamped "167" "Printed Jul 5 1939 The Owl Drug Co" Thus Irene assembled this album after March 1940.
1939-20
( comments) "219" Mom wrote on back ""Boot Hill" Dodge City, Kansas" Mom labeled " _ I didn't get the name?" June 1939
1939-21
( comments) Yet another print time - stamped "Brown Photo Service Minneapolis, Minn Dec 20 1939" with red number "115B" Mom wrote "The end of a hot (underlined) windy day. Somewhere in Colorado. From ZL6 006 these are Carmie, Rex and Hugo. Note Pearl's car is behind and on left side of photo. June 1939
1939-22
( comments) "167" Mom labeled "We see the foothills - Colorado" June 1939
1939-23
( comments) A new roll of film - stamped "166 printed Jul 5 1939 The Owl Drug Co." Mom labeled "Too far away" "Colorado" June 1939
1939-24
( comments) Stamped "Brown Photo Service Minneapolis, Minn Dec 20 1939" but this has a black number 589B, so we have a different roll of film. Mom wrote on back "Cheyenne" but she labeled it "In Cheyenne?" I beleive this is Cheyenne. Note The "Karl Winter" on some store. It turns out that in 2017 there is a Dr. Winter in Cheyenne who was born and raised in Cheyenne! Furthermore, the lower highway sign on the telephone pole is for US 40. The historic US 40 is the Lincoln Highway and yes it did go through Cheyenne! Finally, I believe the building with the tower is the old Union Pacific RR Station that is still in Cheyenne. Case proved. June 1939
1939-25
( comments) "Red 116" Mom labeled "Locked bumpers - Torrington, Wyoming" Looks like somehow the two cars they were traveling in got hooked up. Note one car is a Hudson and I think the license plate says 1939. Looks like Carmie, Rex and Hugo. June 1939
1939-26
( comments) "Red 116" Mom labeled "We engage a cabin at Yellowstone" Looks like Carmie and Pearl. June 1939
1939-27

1939-36
( comments) "169 Jul 5 1939" Old faithful in rain. June 1939.
1939-37
( comments) "March 1940" Mom labeled "Singing Lake" June 1939
1939-38
( comments) "169 Jul 5" Mom labeled "No, we weren't afraid" June 1939
1939-39
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Yellowstone" June 1939
1939-40
( comments) "166 ...." Mom wrote on back Grotto Geyser Yellowstone" Possibly this photo belongs before Old Faithful photos as one of those is a 169 photo. June 1939
1939-41
( comments) "Red 115 B Brown ... Dec 20 1939" Mom labeled "Mammoth Terraces (This picture was not taken in Little America.)" Irene June 1939

1939-46
( comments) "169 Jul 5 1939 The Owl Drug Co" Mom wrote onback "Golden Gate of Yellowstone" June 1939
1939-47
( comments) Red "115 B....Dec 20 1939" Mom wrote on back "Pearl picking rocks! Yelowsstone" She also labeled it "The end of Yellowstone"
1939-48
( comments) Red "116 Dec 20 1939" Mom labeled "Sunday morning in Salt Lake City" As mentioned earlier Mom had these in album before Yellowstone, but I am almost certain they belong after. Left to right, Hugo, Pearl (inside car), Carmie, Rex. I believe this is a "separation' photo. I think Irene and Pearl went on alone from this point. June 1939
1939-49
( comments) Stamped "219" Shared label with previous photo. Pearl and Irene in Salt Lake City. Note the hubcap clearly says Hudson 112. If you google that you get "Hudson’s peak was in 1929, when the company produced no less than 300,000 Hudson and Essex cars worldwide. But, despite the popular, inexpensive Essex and Essex-Terraplane (1932-38), the Great Depression mortally wounded Hudson. In 1938, though, the line was renamed to Hudson 112; and Hudson began building cars in Canada through a contract with Canada Top and Body in Tilbury, Ontario. In 1938, production numbers dropped from 111,342 (in 1937) to just 51,078. More than half of the production in 1938 was the 112, which had a 175-cubic-inch L-head six that was destroked from 5 inches to 4.5 inches. The 112 had a suspension like the larger Hudsons, a forward-hinged “alligator” hood, and a wheelbase 5 inches shorter than the Terraplane. However, the two-year offering wasn’t completely new – it used Terraplane body parts whenever possible. And despite the cost-cutting efforts Hudson made with the 112, it still cost $25-45 more than its Chevrolet, Ford, and Plymouth competitors" My guess is that the car is Pearl's. .June 1939.
1939-50
( comments) "166 Jul 5 1939" Mom labeled "We leave Salt Lake" June 1939
1939-51
( comments) Red "116 B Dec 20 1939" Mom wrote on back "Canyon near Salt Lake" She also labeled it "Looking away from theLake" June 1939
1939-52
( comments) "589 B Brown .... Dec 20 1939" Mom wrote on back "Salt Lake from mountain canyon" She labeled it "Looking toward the Lake" It appears this photo and previous were taken by different cameras, but at same spot just looking in different directions. It looks like they were on a dirt road! Did they cut cross country to get to Oregon? Or was this a day trip before thy left Salt Lake? June 1939.
1939-53
( comments) Red "116 B Dec 20 1939" Mom labeled "In bleak Nevada" She had this photo out of order - in with California photos. June 1939
1939-54
( comments) Stamped on back "Vista House Crown Point" Mom added "Oregon" This is a purchased tourist photo. June 1939.
1939-55
( comments) Another purchased card. On back "Rowena Loops ... Columbia River Highway" I assume Irene drove along the Columbia River. June 1939
1939-56
( comments) Red "115 B .... Dec 20 1939" Mom wrote on back "Somewhere in Oregon" but in album, Mom labeled it "Somewhere in Washington" Although Mom appears to have her geography somewhat mixed up by having photos out of order, my guess is that this really is Washington. Why? Because Washington is just across the Columbia River and is easy to reach. I suspect Mom went across the river just to be able to say she had been in Washington. She accidentally put Oregon on the back because when she first saw the photo it was in with other Oregon photos, but when she put the album together she remembered she had been in Washington. June 1939
1939-57
( comments) Red "115 B Dec 20 1939" Mom labeled "There's two sides to everything" Pearl and Irene, Note their car in background. June 1939.
1939-58
( comments) Red "115 B Dec 20 1939" Same label as previous photo. Pearl and Irene
1939-59
( comments) "168 Jul 5 1939" Mom labeled "Crossing Golden Gate Bridge" June 1939
1939-60
( comments) Stamped on back "173 Jul 5 1939" However, someone (Mom?) has crossed out the 73 and written in 68 to indicate this is really part of roll 168. Mom labeled "Pearl in the Pacific"
1939-61
( comments) Red "115 ? Dec 20 1939 "Mom labeled "Big Rock at Twain Harte, California (Pearl, Woodrow, Doug, Marie, Roy)" Doug, Marie and Roy are the Watkins family. Marie is a sister (Hannah Marie Olson) of Emma Olson. I don't know who Woodrow is - looks like a brother of Doug. Twain Harte is part of Yosemite. June 1939
1939-62
( comments) "46" on back. Mom labeled "Chapel of Stanford University Palo Alto, California" June 1939.
1939-63
( comments) "516" on back (this is start of several 516 photos. Mom on back "Oil wells in Pacific Between San Francisco and Los Angeles" June 1939
1939-64
( comments) "5 3 ->4 8" on back but someone put in "/16" to indicate really 516. Mom labeled this and next photo "Nelson Picnic Santa Anita Park" Santa Anita Park is in Santa Ana (south of LA) This shows Pearl and Irene. Possibly July 4 1939 (see caption for ZL6 055)
1939-65
( comments) "516" on back. Mom labeled "Nelson Picnic Santa Anita Park" I see Pearl in center left of the photo, but not Irene. Hence this is probably a reunion of Pearl's family. Photo ZL5 266 and 267 show a "photo booth" photo of Irene and Pearl. Mom wrote Long Beach July 1939 on back of it. Could this reunion be a July 4 picnic? I am assuming so, and so I will now put July 1939 on southern Calif photos. Assume July 4, 1939.
1939-66
( comments) "516" Mom Labeled "Scenes from Huntington Estate" Google doesn't have info on this Estate, but the town of Huntington Park is just south of LA. Looks like Irene under arch. July 1939

1939-81

1939-82

1939-83
( comments) "643 E Brown Sep 7 1939" Mom labeled "Fountain in the Public Square Avalon, Catalina" Pearl and Irene. July 1939
1939-84
( comments) "643 E Brown Sep 7 1939" Mom wrote on back "On the boat coming home from Catalina" and she labeled it "Homeward Bound" This is one of my favorite photos of Mom. It is the last photo taken by them on the trip and Mom is headed home. It appears there are no further photos of trip. Apparently Mom and Pearl just hightailed it for home. Did they drive home via Route 66 (LA to Chicago)? Or did Mom leave Pearl and take a train home? On the back of my copy of this photo in a frame I wrote (train trip with Pearl) So at one time I thought a train was involved.?? July 1939.
1939-85
( comments) Mom must have purchased 12 tourist photos in Yellowstone. 11 of them are put in after the Catalina photos without any comment by Mom. They are small and not very good with no evidence that Mom saw any of the places. I scanned 2 just as an example of what Mom bought as a tourist. June 1939.

1939-87
( comments) Mom wrote on back "You name it -- Anna Summer 1939" Anna Johnson.
1939-88
( comments) These 7 photos were in Irene's photo wallet that she carried for ID. I will put all in 1972 as she was using it when she had her stroke. I will also put individual photos in appropriate year. 1972 On back mom wrote "Circa 1938 - 39" Looks like Carl, Howard, Allen, Doug. I am assuming summer 1939
1939-89
( comments) These 6 photos are the backs of ZL99 286 - 291. Note Mom writes "Four of a kind Circa 1938 -39" They are Carl, Howard, Allen, and Douglas.
1939-90
( comments) Stamped on back "Brown Photo Service Minneapolis, Minn Dec 20 1939" I am prety certain this is Roger Lund as he was born 1/1/1939. Alice Joy was born later than this photo. Say Roger and about July 1939. Dos not look like Alice - could be one of Roger's sisters.
1939-91
( comments) On back "Roger Lund (Alice and Bill Lund) Youngest born 1939" Looks about 9 months old so Sept 1939.
1939-92
( comments) Stamped on back "Brown Dec 21 1939" no other information. This is Alice, Irene and a woman who looks like Marie Watkins (see ZL5 041) Marie is sister of Emma Olson Assume Fall 1939.
1939-93
( comments) Stamped on back "Brown Dec 21 1939" From ZL5 084 these girls are Zana Lund, Barbara Dougnert and Deanna Thomson. Assume Fall 1939
1939-94
( comments) Stamped on back "Brown Dec 21 1939" no other information. This is Alice, Bill , and maybe Aunt Marie Watkins. Assume fall 1939
1939-95
( comments) Stamped on back "Brown Dec 21 1939" no other information. Since we have Lund's on other photos with above stamp I am assuming this is Roger Lund. Assume fall 1939. Further proof this is Roger is that the same tub shows up in Dec 1943 photo of Don at Alice and Bill's (ZL9 098)
1939-96
( comments) Stamped on back "Brown Dec 21 1939" Mom printed Deanna Thompson, Barbara Dougnert and Zana Lund" I have no idea who the first girls are. Probably just friends of Zana. Assume fall 1939
1939-97
( comments) on back "Brown Dec 21 1939" Dad labeled "Vernon" I don't recognize male on right but it could be Doug.
