     Album:Family/Historical photos.:Gramps Allen:1930 Decade:1938 Al Ljung Album
1938-1
( comments) Has "3" stamped on back. Mom wrote on back "Plane of Northwest Air-lines on Mpls - Chicago trip April 1938 Minneapolis Airport" Many of the next photos have to do with Fran and Herb's wedding on April 16 1938.
1938-2
( comments) No info, but has 3 stamped on back. Could be Inez, Evie Larson, Alice. (almost certainly Alice, Inez identified from next photo) Assume in Chicago for wedding. April 1938
1938-3
( comments) No info, but clearly goes with ZL5 075. Inez and Irene. Note Irene is sitting on railing! Also she is holding a camera. April 1938
1938-4
( comments) Has "3" stamped on back. No info, but Inez and "me" from other photos plus another unknown. April 16, 1938 on way to wedding.
1938-5
( comments) Someone has written on back "Irene Inez and me April 16 - 1938 In Chicago for Fran and Herb's wedding" I do not know who the "me" is. Inez is a friend of Irene's
1938-6
( comments) Inez on left. She is dressed for Fran and Herb's wedding April 16, 1938
1938-7
( comments) One of the Jun 29 1943 reprints. No other info, but clearly same person as next photo, so 1938. The next 6 photos appear to be some picnic or outing Mom took to Rose Center Mill in May 1938.
1938-8
( comments) Stamped on back "May 25 1938" No other info
1938-9

1938-12
( comments) Stamped on back "May 25 1938" Mom has written on back "Rose Center Mill, Minnesota May, 1938"
1938-13
( comments) No info. Looks like Howard. Guess 1938. Is this outside the Cedar St house that Mom was in in 1938? Hey, I was right! Later in this album there is a duplicate of this photo and Mom wrote on back "Howard Spring 1938" Note the steel wagon in back - looks like the steel wagon we grew up with at 1103.
1938-14
( comments) No info, but clearly Howard Hanson. Looks like a HS Graduation picture. Photographer is Gray's from Wadena. He probably graduated in 1938 and he may have been living with brother Harold in Wadena at the time. Assume 1938
1938-15
( comments) Dad labeled "WPA curb construction in Kensington 1938 or 39" Albin did work with the WPA, and he is probably the man on far left. Assume 1938
1938-16
( comments) No info. Must be a mill race. Goes with next photo. Assume 1938.
1938-17
( comments) No info. Must be a mill race. Goes with previous photo. Assume 1938.
1938-18
( comments) Dad labeled "Ida's rock garden near apple trees" The back is stamped "Sunset Service Jul 21 1938 St Paul, Minn"
1938-19
( comments) Dad labeled 6 of next 7 photos (not funeral home one) "Photos after Albin and Ida Ljung purchased home at 1103 Hawthorne St. Alex" This photo labeled "Ida's goldfish and Lilly pool at 1103" The back is stamped Jul 21 1938. There are two other photos stamped with same date (ZL4 316 and 381) 381 clearly is this same pool, but it also is clearly not at 1103. So this is a pool whereever they were living in 1938. (It is true that Ida later did have a pool at 1103)
1938-20
( comments) Goldfish pond. July 1938.
1938-21
( comments) Dad labeled "Ida's pool and garden" Back is stamped "Jul 21 1938" This photo goes with ZL4 315, and shows that pool was not at 1103.
1938-22
( comments) Stamped on back "Jul 1, 1938" No other info
1938-23
( comments) No info. Dog on right looks like litter mate of Jiggs (if not Jiggs). If so assume 1922. But wait! Stamp on back says "Jul 18 1938" So that means I have no idea who these dogs are. Leave as Jul 1938.
1938-24
( comments) Stamped on back "Jul 10 1938" Mom printed on back "Woodrow Kallstrom Willard Jacobson Elaine Kallstrom Corrine Kallstrom Marlys Kallstrom (Front) Lorraine Larson Kenneth Kallstrom Robert Kallstrom Doris Eastman Fritz Jacobson" None of these people are in our family tree. I remember a Kallstrom family at Fahlun Church.
1938-25
( comments) Stamped on back "Jul 10 1938" Mom printed on back "Kenneth, Bobby, Marlys Kallstrom" goes with previous photo
1938-26
( comments) Stamped on back "Sunset Service Jul 21 1938 St Paul Minn" No other info. Note that is not the 1916 tractor, and not the Model A. Looks like a conveyer belt system to load sand into a trailer.
1938-27
( comments) Stamped on back "Sunset Service Jul 21 1938 St Paul Minn" Dad labeled "Lambert and Howard" and "'16 Ford T tractor 1st ver" I think this is the traactor stored in shed at 1103. The photos from this point to end of album ZL5 are photos of all of Allen's vehicles. I will not keep them together, but will put them in the year photographed.
1938-28
( comments) Dad scanned this Ford Photo. On scan he wrote "1926 Model "T" tudor coach Al's second car - completly rebuilt from '26 Coupe - 10.00 and '26 coach body - 4.00 Total cost about 60.00 and a lot of work" Put in 1938 when he had car.
1938-29
( comments) Stamped on back "Sunset Service Jul 21 1938 St Paul Minn" Dad labeled "'19 Harley D. horiz.opp.twn" Allen
1938-30
( comments) Stamped on back "Sunset Service Jul 21 1938 St Paul Minn" Dad labeled "'26 Ford Tudor"
1938-31
( comments) Stamped on back "Sunset Service Jul 21 1938 St Paul Minn" Dad labeled "1916 Model T Allen and 1st tractor Albin rode mower while Allen drove" also "Chains for tires Dodge Xmission Terraplan steering" Also on a reprint of this photo Dad wrote "First version of Model "T" Ford tractor. Pulled sicle bar mower and hay wagon made of buggy frame - couldn't afford tires"
1938-32
( comments) No info But next 4 photos are all taken in same room. I don't know who the people are in any of them. But see comment on ZZL5 066. This might be Ted Ording and his kids. Guess 1938
1938-33
( comments) No info. Guess 1938
1938-34
( comments) Mom ? wrote on back ""Stradivarious - for various reasons!" When does he make a "personal appearance" What a wow!" Just a thought - look at the photo of Ted Ording (ZL5 069) and my guess is this is Ted Ording. Guess 1938
1938-35
( comments) no info. This looks like the piano we had at 1103 and note that there are A.C. Hanson horses on top. Is this the 1938 Cedar St house? Guess 1938.
1938-36
( comments) Someone wrote on back "Donald Dahlberg 1938" Not in our family tree.
1938-37
( comments) No info. Inside Fran's house?? Assume 1938.
1938-38
( comments) "Brown Photo Service Minneapolis,Minn Jul 1, 1938" No other info. Possiblly some kids in Chicago?
1938-39

1938-40
( comments) "Brown Photo Service Minneapolis,Minn Jul 1, 1938" No other info. But looks like Herb.
1938-41
( comments) "Brown Photo Service Minneapolis,Minn Aug 4, 1938" Mom wrote on back "Roller coaster at Riverview Park, Chicago. Taken from the top of a ferris wheel. September 1938" However from the processing date on the back this photo was taken before Aug 4 (in other words before Mom went to Benton Harbor)
1938-42
( comments) "Brown Photo Service Minneapolis,Minn Aug 4, 1938" No other info. But this is another Riverview photo.
1938-43
( comments) Stamped on back "Brown ...Aug 4 1938" This is back of Field Museum. Irene must have visited it.
1938-44
( comments) Stamped on back "Brown .... Aug 18 1938" In 2016 I was looking at this album with Dad and he said the next batch of photos were taken when Irene worked one summer in Benton Harbor. This must be driveway to place she worked.
1938-45
( comments) Stamped "Aug 18 1938" Mom wrote "Benson Cottage, taken from bottom of valley. Benton Harbor, Michigan 1938"
1938-46
( comments) Stamped Aug 4 1938. Mom labeled "Mitel Dickens"
1938-47

( comments) "Aug 4 1938" No other info
1938-50
( comments) "Aug 4 1938" Mom wrote on back "Ross Observatory Benton Harbor Mich. 1938" Ross is the name of an observatory of this design. There is a Ross Coastal Plain Marsh Preserve just to north of Benton Harbor.
1938-51
( comments) Mom labeled "Sand Dunes" "Aug 18 1938"
1938-52

1938-53
( comments) Fran and Irene at Benton Harbor August 1938
1938-54
( comments) Irene and Fran Aug 1938
1938-55
( comments) Stamped "Aug 18 1938" Mom labeled "Ramon Nelson" In 2016 when looking at this photo Dad commented "Ramon was interested in Irene" No other details!
1938-56
( comments) "Aug 18 1938" Mom wrote on back "Craigic House Glenn Michigan 1938"
1938-57
( comments) On back someone (Ramon?) wrote "Ramon Nelson Benton Harbor, Michigan August 12, 1938 Taken in B. H. about 1933" So did Ramon give this to Irene in 1938? If so, why? Is Ramon in the boat? Why did Mom keep it? I am sure someone can make up a good story about this photo! Put in 1938.
1938-58
( comments) Mom on back "Ross home and observatory from the beach in mid-winter. I doubt Mom was actually there in mid-winter (or did Ramon invite her up???) Assume late 1938.
1938-59
( comments) Mom on back "Rocky Gap Beach House Bento Harbor in winter" Assume late 1938
1938-60
( comments) Mom wrote on back "New Florence Missouri August 1938" Irene Since this is in album just after Michigan I am going to assume Mom went to Missouri just after Michigan.
1938-61
( comments) Jun 29 1943 reprint. Mom wrote on back "Aunt Clara New Florence Missouri June (June crossed out) August 1938"
1938-62
( comments) Jun 29 1943 reprint. No other info, but since it is in with Missouri photos my guess is Aunt Clara's house. Aug 1938 Yes it is, see also 1939 photo of Clara's house.
1938-63
( comments) Jun 29 1943 reprint. No other info, but I believe this is a son of Aunt Clara. Note house is Aunt Clara's See 1939 photo ZL6 005. Aug 1938.
1938-64
( comments) Mom wrote on back "Irene 915 Cedar Street Alex 1938" If you look closely at the calendar on the wall you see that it is a month with the 25th as Sunday. In 1938 that makes this either Sept or Dec Since the 25th box on the calendar doesn't give any hint of Christmas I am going to guess this is Sept 1938.
1938-65
( comments) Mom now put in 3 pages of photos when she was teaching. It looks like she put in these photos in June 1943, because there are a lot of the "reprint" photos made Jun 29 1943 (All of the photos with the wavy edges) I assume the straight edge photos are ones processed earlier. Unfortunately, there is no information on the back of any photo or labeled by anyone. Given that these photos come in the album right after the summer 1938 photos, I am going to assume these photos are all from the 1938 - 1939 school year. I am putting them all in 1938 just to keep them together. However, note that Dad in his family history states Mom taught at District 40 for 3 school years 1936 - 1939. This photo shows Irene (lower right) with students.
1938-66
( comments) The schoolhouse was a short distance NE of Fahlun church. Irene stayed in a farmhouse just across the road. Put this in 1938, although it looks a little more like spring (so 1939)

( comments) Assume 1938.
1938-82
( comments) Fun in snow after blizzard. Assume 1938.
1938-83
( comments) Note buried pump! Just to right of pump it looks like a student has just landed in deep snow after jumping off the empty swing. Assume 1938.
1938-84
( comments) Looks like students bringing wood for furnace in school! Assume 1938.
1938-85

1938-87
( comments) Girls on swing Assume 1938.
1938-88
( comments) Assume 1938.
1938-89
( comments) Playing with jack knives at school! The student on left is at the start of his turn. He will flip knife into the air, and his points depend on how it sticks. The student on far right had a good turn and he gets the points for the big blade sticking. I played it on grass, but Google "pocket knife games" and you can find a version played on wood porches and scoring like a baseball game. Assume 1938.
1938-90
( comments) Students Assume 1938.
1938-91
( comments) Students Assume 1938.

1938-98
( comments) Monday Dad and I drove around his old haunts 1938
1938-99
( comments) No info, but next 3 photos seem to have been processed at same time (have "6" stamped on back) I am pretty sure this is Zana Lund. See ZL5 084. Assume fall 1938.
1938-100
( comments) No info, but these 3 photos seem to have been processed at same time (have "6" stamped on back) Given that the previous picture is Zana, that makes this Chuck Lund. Assume fall 1938.
1938-101
( comments) No info, but these 3 photos seem to have been processed at same time (have "6" stamped on back) This is Irene. Irene as same hairdo as a 1938 photo so assume fall 1938
1938-102
( comments) The next 4 photos show Mom is experimenting with her camera! See the next photo for what she wrote about this photo. She deliberately jiggled camera to get an artistic photo!!! No information on date. Include in 1938 as other photos in album around here are 1938.
1938-103
( comments) Mom wrote on back of previous photo "A jiggled time exposure - looks like stiple painting or somepn" Assume 1938.
1938-104
( comments) Artistic photo by Irene. Assume 1938.
1938-105
( comments) This photo has "6" stamped on it. The other 3 artistic photos have "3" stamped. My guess is this was actually taken first and processed. When Mom got it back she then took the other three. Assume 1938.
1938-106
( comments) Apparently Irene's second attempt to photograph herself with a time exposure. (The first attempt was slightly under exposed) See next photo. Assume 1938
1938-107
( comments) Back of previous photo. Mom wrote "A time exposure at night. I took it myself looking into a mirror." Note stamped "3" Assume 1938.
1938-108
( comments) No info. Part of Dad's car series of photos. This is the 1926 Model T. Allen going tobogganing. Assume 1938.
1938-109
( comments) These 7 photos were in Irene's photo wallet that she carried for ID. I will put all in 1972 as she was using it when she had her stroke. I will also put individual photos in appropriate year. 1972 On back mom wrote "Circa 1938 - 39" Looks like Carl, Howard, Allen, Doug. I am assuming summer 1939
